Buddhism acknowledges that meditation is an essential practice for those striving to develop personally and spiritually. It is one of the main practices emphasized by the Buddha, although one does not need to be a Buddhist to benefit from it.
Two traditional meditation practices are taught and practiced at the Rocky Mountain Buddhist Center: the Mindfulness of Breathing, which helps bring about calm and concentrated states of mind, and the Metta Bhavana, which helps develop emotional positivity and confidence. Our meditation classes are open to everyone, regardless of religious background or belief.
For more information on the meditation practices we teach, please check out Wildmind, a website established by Bodhipaksa, former director of the RMBC.
Introduction to Buddhism and Meditation Class
Thursdays at 7:00 pm, March 4 to April 1
540 South Second West, Missoula, MT
A five week introductory course in meditation will be taught by Tejavani and Satyaloka, ordained members of the Triatna Buddhist Order (Formerly Western Buddhist Order). They will be teaching two fundamental Buddhist meditation practices; the mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana practices. They are designed to develop calmness and clarity of mind and positive emotions such as empathy, compassion and self-confidence. Tejavai worked for many years as a nurse practitioner, and Satyaloka is currently a mental health counselor. They bring this work experience along with their immersion in Buddhist practice to bear on teaching meditation. The class style is much like an adult education class rather than anything overtly spiritual or religious. An experiential learning format will be employed with lots of time for interaction and feedback.
Suggested donation for class is $60, but all are welcome regardless of ability to pay.
